Buying a Used Tesla: Arrange the Account Handover

A used Tesla purchase includes a digital handover as well as keys and title documents. Tesla distinguishes transferring ownership from merely adding a driver. Plan the official account process before collection, while you can still coordinate with the seller.
Use Tesla’s current instructions
Consult the official support page for adding or removing vehicles in the Tesla app. Requirements and processing details can change. Submit documents through the official process, not through a link supplied by an unknown intermediary claiming to complete the transfer for you.
Access to a vehicle in an app does not replace evidence of ownership or the state’s title process. Confirm both. Conversely, completed sale paperwork may not instantly settle account access, so allow for the manufacturer’s verification steps when planning the handover.
Verify paid features individually
Ask what is included in the sale and confirm whether it remains with the vehicle after transfer. Do not assume a feature or charging benefit displayed in the seller’s account will transfer on the same terms. Get relevant claims in writing and check the applicable manufacturer terms.
Confirm the keys or key cards supplied, any applicable PIN arrangements and a workable collection plan. Test agreed functions without sharing unnecessary personal credentials. The previous owner should follow the official removal or transfer process rather than handing you their account password.
Keep a purchase record
Save the VIN, signed documents and correspondence needed to resolve a transfer question. Contact Tesla support if the official process does not complete as expected. Digital convenience is useful, but it should sit alongside the same inspection, battery, recall and transaction checks you would perform on another used EV.
