GAP is intended to address a possible difference between a vehicle’s insurance settlement and the amount owed on its loan after a qualifying total loss or theft. It is a separate question from whether you can afford repairs or make the monthly payment.

Estimate the exposure rather than guessing

Compare the outstanding balance with a realistic vehicle-value estimate. Consider how the balance changes during the period you expect to keep the loan. A large down payment and a short loan can create a different situation from a small deposit with old debt added to the purchase.

Suppose a qualifying settlement is $15,000 and the remaining loan payoff is $17,000. The apparent difference is $2,000. Actual payment depends on the product’s definitions, exclusions and limits; do not assume it covers every dollar, a deductible or all rolled-in debt. These numbers are illustrative.

Compare providers and terms

Ask the vehicle insurer, lender or other eligible provider about available products. Compare coverage and total price, not just the label. Confirm any eligibility restrictions, maximum benefit, exclusions and cancellation provisions. A cheaper arrangement with a materially different limit may not be equivalent.

If you add a GAP product to the loan, request the revised amount financed and total repayment. You may pay borrowing costs on the product. If told it is necessary for approval, ask the lender directly and request the relevant contract wording. The CFPB explains that optional GAP can be declined.

Revisit it when the loan changes

Selling, refinancing or paying off the loan can affect whether the product remains useful or whether a refund may apply. Ask the provider about the procedure and keep the agreement. GAP is not a reason to accept an otherwise unaffordable purchase; it addresses a defined loss scenario within a larger ownership budget.
