An add-on can be easy to accept when it appears as a few dollars in a monthly payment. Ask for its cash price first. Then decide whether you want the product and understand what it actually covers.

Request a clean comparison quote

Ask for the vehicle’s itemized purchase total with optional products excluded. Request a second version showing each proposed product separately. That makes it possible to compare the car itself across sellers and prevents several unrelated decisions from being bundled into one unexplained total.

Read what you are buying

A service contract, appearance product, theft-related product and GAP arrangement address different risks. Ask who provides each one, what events qualify, what is excluded and how claims are made. A marketing name cannot tell you whether a benefit duplicates something you already have.

Calculate the borrowing cost

An illustrative $900 product added to a loan increases the amount financed by $900. Interest on that additional balance can increase its total cost. Ask for revised disclosures with and without the product. Do not treat its effect on one monthly payment as its full price.

Question any claim that it is required

Ask the seller to identify the contractual or lending requirement and confirm it directly with the lender if necessary. Government charges, dealer charges and optional products are different categories. Local rules vary; use the relevant consumer authority for a dispute about what may be charged.

Check cancellation before accepting

Get the cancellation procedure, refund calculation and contact details in writing. A potential later refund is not a reason to buy something you do not want now. Keep copies of product agreements as well as the vehicle contract so you can identify the provider and terms without returning to the sales desk.
