Fuel economy matters more when you drive many miles, but a higher mpg figure is not a price tag. Convert it into annual gallons and dollars, then compare the result with purchase cost, comfort and the condition of each candidate.

Describe the commute

Estimate annual distance, route type and parking. Include regular non-commute trips. Use official ratings for the exact model year and powertrain as a common starting point, then recognize that your route and weather can change real consumption.

At an illustrative 15,000 annual miles, a 30-mpg car uses 500 gallons and a 40-mpg car uses 375. At an assumed $3.50 per gallon, the difference is $437.50 a year. These are example inputs, not current fuel prices or ratings for a particular model.

Compare the premium over your ownership period

If the more efficient car costs an extra $2,000, four years of that illustrative fuel saving total $1,750 before other differences. Insurance, financing and maintenance can change the outcome. Do not claim a fuel-only saving as the whole ownership result.

Check seat support, visibility, road noise and control access at representative speeds. A car that saves fuel but causes daily discomfort may not suit your needs. Safety equipment and condition also deserve attention even when the fuel calculation is close.

Keep the shortlist broad

Compare a compact sedan, a suitable hybrid and an EV only if charging fits your routine. Request insurance quotes and inspections for the strongest candidates. Choose an efficient car whose purchase and operation work together, rather than paying any price for the highest mpg number.
