Buying a first car for a teenager can turn into a search for the cheapest small vehicle nearby. Start with a safety shortlist and insurance quotes instead. Then find an individual car with appropriate equipment, documented condition and a budget that leaves room for maintenance.

Use current safety guidance

Consult the current IIHS recommended-vehicle information and relevant crash-test results. Check the exact model years and equipment qualifications, not merely the model name. Recommendations can change as testing and the available used fleet change.

Verify equipment on the car

Ask for reliable build information and inspect the vehicle’s actual features. Driver-assistance systems can vary by trim or option package. Confirm operation and investigate warning lights. Do not assume a generic listing feed accurately identifies every fitted system.

Get the insurance quote early

Tell the insurer the intended driver and actual use. Compare equivalent limits and deductibles across candidates. A low asking price can be offset by a recurring premium that makes the family budget difficult.

Try the driving position together

Check sight lines, mirror adjustment and the ability to reach controls comfortably. Use a calm, permitted test with an appropriately licensed driver. Avoid treating a powerful engine or an impressive acceleration figure as a first-car advantage.

Budget for keeping it usable

Arrange an independent inspection and resolve relevant safety issues before routine use. Verify tires and recalls, and plan scheduled maintenance. Vehicle selection supports a broader family driving plan; it does not replace training, appropriate restrictions or attention to local licensing requirements.
